This is her Story.

6 years ago today, God chose to call my mother, (AKA: Nonna, Cumare, Amerigan, Ma,) home to him. She was a wonderful woman, full of spunk, love and life. She was my hero, only I didn’t know it until I was much older.

This woman loved her family with all her heart and soul. Her crooked fingers would cook elaborate meals for her children, her children’s friends, her grandchildren, and their friends, and was blessed to also do so for a couple of her great grandchildren. She was proud of her family, and would brag to anyone who would listen. Her son the Dentist, her other son the Dr. and Professor, and me the Social Worker who sings at church. (Don’t think she wasn’t critical though, if it seemed I made mistakes playing at mass, she would say in her broken English, “what happened did you forget to practice?). She loved to make people laugh, and had an infectious smile and laugh. So many funny stories that are often shared among family members. She would do just about anything to make her grandchildren laugh. Since her passing, my grandson Nikolas was born. My mom would have eaten him up with so much love.

All of you know that my mom and dad came from Italy in 1960 with my brothers, hoping for a better life for their children. They left their home, their friends, their family, and even a nice business, but they felt that America would provide a better life for their children. The sacrifice they made is immeasurable. I was born 1 year later. My parents built their own tailoring business in Lockport. My dad was the “Roma Tailor” and when he got ill, my mom took over. It is sad, that as I get older, when I say proudly I am the Roma Tailor’s daughter, that very few people remember him or the shop. Growing up in my home gave me so many unique experiences that you can only get in a bi-national home. My parents would share stories about their life in Italy and we would visit family in Italy often, and I loved it.

Today I mourn my mother, as I do everyday. I miss her so very much. But today I also honor her as the hero she was to me, and the wonderful parent, grandparent, great grandparent, and friend that she was to so many others. Mamma, prega per noi. (Pray for us).

In loving memory. Your daughter, Lucy
